Work to fix Sabah NRW woes soon, says ministry
KOTA KINABALU: Work to rectify the non-revenue water (NRW) problems in Sabah will begin in the next two to three months’ time.
Secretary-general of the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang, said contractors are being identified to undertake the rectification works utilising the RM171 million grant from the government.
“Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, said that there are many ways to address the shortage of clean water supply in Sabah. But more critical action needed to be done now about the NRW.
“The problem in Sabah saw leakage of treated water in residential areas going up to 52 percent, so the immediate work would be focusing on identifying the location of the leakages, repair and maintenance of water meters, pipes and water tanks, he said.
Zaini disclosed this to reporters after speaking at a public forum on ‘Science and Policy Making: Reflection on Water, Science and Sustainability’ at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) yesterday.
At the event, Zaini explained how science can be used as the basis for making best policies. He also shared the progress of global and national sustainable development goals, which he believes is an important aspect to be understood by academicians.
Also present at yesterday’s forum were UMS vice chancellor Datuk Dr D. Kamaruddin D Mudin and Kota Kinabalu City Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai.
