Lahad Datu hit by flash floods

-

LAHAD DATU: The heavy downpour from Sunday night until Monday night caused flash floods here, particularly the flood-prone areas.

Among the affected areas were Batu Satu and Kampung Kokos at Jalan Segama, Kampung Sepagaya at Jalan Silam, Sungai Pancuran, Sungai Tengah Nipah and Jalan Silabukan.

A survey conducted in those areas found that the road could still be accessed by vehicles, except for Sungai Pancuran areas and Sungai Tengah Nipah.

The houses and buildings were only slightly affected by the floods, which began to recede at midnight on Tuesday.

No untoward incident was reported, while Fire and Rescue Department personnel monitored the affected areas regularly.

Meanwhile, in Tungku, villagers at Kampung Silabukan and Kampung Teburi prepared themselves for the flood but were not affected despite the heavy rain.

Tungku Community Development Officer Abdul Momen Angchai said villagers took precautionary measures as their village had been hit by floods before.

Fortunately, the rain did not affect the low land in Tungku, he said.

However, he added that a survey found that Sungai Sebrang, Sungai Silabukan and Sungai Segama were still flowing heavily and overflowed to the plantation areas.
