Tourist dies after fall along Mulu’s Pinnacle Trail

MIRI: A tourist from the United Kingdom died after he fell and injured himself while attempting the Pinnacle Trail in Mulu National Park on Monday.

Nigel Bevan, 72, suffered serious injuries to the head and body.

A 21-member Mulu Park Search and Rescue (SAR) team took eight hours along the steep and rough terrain to reach Bevan, at the pinnacle of Gunung Api.

It is understood that he was still conscious when the SAR team arrived, but fell unconsciou­s during the journey down and died before the team arrived at Camp 5 around 6am yesterday.

When met at Miri Hospital, Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said they received an email from Mulu Park manager Hein Gertsner at 9.07pm.

“After receiving the email, we immediatel­y activated our Bomba Air Unit and they departed from Miri at 7.30am today (yesterday) and arrived at Mulu at 8.15am.

“The deceased was later transporte­d out of Camp 5 at 8.45am in a helicopter and arrived at Miri Hospital at 9.35am today (yesterday),” he said.

Bevan had arrived in Mulu National Park on Saturday and was supposed to return to Miri yesterday.

It is learnt that he was on the trip with four other climbers and a guide.

Meanwhile, Marudi police chief DSP Gabriel Risut said a police report had been lodged on the incident.

The case has been classified as sudden death.

Gabriel also said the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has been informed of the incident.
