All systems go for top notch table tennis action
KOTA KINABALU: It's all systems go for some top notch table tennis action as players from all over Sabah converge for the state level championships happening in Beaufort, this weekend.
The prestigious annual championship is organised by Sabah Table Tennis Association (STTA) and more than 10 district teams will try to outdo one another.
Among them are the Kota Kinabalu Table Tennis Association, the main contenders for the overall title.
"Last year we were runnersup and this time we are bringing another strong challenge to try and win," KKTTA president Edward Chua said when contacted here, yesterday.
Chua, who is also team manager of the 50-member KKTTA squad, hoped thay they would do well in all the seven categories.
The main ones are the men's and women's singles and the team events. The other categories are perpaduan men's singles, perpaduan women's singles and veteran singles.
"We have done our best in training and we hope to do well in all our matches. This is an important tournament for us and I think for all the other teams too.
"KKTTA will definitely enjoy competing again and we are happy and ready to do our best," Chua said.
Meanwhile, STTA secretary Tommy Tong said a total of 400 paddlers including coaches and team officials are taking part this year.
The three-day championship starts on Friday (March 30) and preparation for the staging is nearly complete.
"There are 12 district teams taking part and right now we are in the final stage of preparing the competition venue which is Dewan Pak Musa," he said.
Sandakan will try to defend their overall title but others like Keningau and Tawau will try to deny them glory. The other competing teams are Papar, Penampang, Tenom, Tuaran, Kudat, Ranau and Lahad Datu.
