KOTA KINABALU: Avid fitness trainer and Zumba instructor Michelle Koh was yesterday made the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sabah Branch G-WAR icon.

Koh, who was propelled into stardom when she won the first gold for the country in Karate at the South East Asean Games in 1989 described the invitation to become an icon as an honour.

She added that she represented civilians and would work together with MACC to encourage the people to help the commission to combat corruption and abuse of power.

“We will work hand in hand,” she said.

Koh also said among the activities that would take place would be fitness related activities open to members of the public.

As to when the activities would take place, she said MACC would inform her of the dates.

“In due date it will be announced. We are waiting for more information. There will be lots of activities,” she said.

Earlier, during the launch of G-WAR, which stands for ‘Gerakan Wanita Anti Rasuah’, meaning Women Against Corruption Movement, MACC Sabah director Dato Sazali Salbi explained the concept of G-WAR and stated that it was an idea to get women onto the same bandwagon as MACC in waging war against corruption and power abuse.

“This is in line with MACC’s Strategic Plan 2017-2020 which is to inculcate the culture of hatred towards corruption and to strengthen community support through an approach that is people friendly,” he said.

He said MACC believed that women needed to play a crucial role in the war against corruption since they held roles as mother, wife, or sister in a family and could educate and influence the community by spreading the message of anticorruption, henceforth creating a community that would detest corruption.

He also said based on MACC’s arrest trends, women were also involved in corruption and power abuse.

“These need to be addressed promptly to ensure they do not worsen,” he said.
