UPP vows to help all BN candidates in GE14, hopes for reciprocal support

-

MIRI: United People’s Party (UPP) will fully support all candidates of Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties in the 14th general election (GE14), and hopes for similar support to be given to its chosen candidates.

Its central organising secretary Bruce Chai, who is also UPP Pujut branch chairman, said there is no need for anyone to question UPP’s commitment to the ruling coalition as the party will work with all BN component parties.

Referring to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between UPP and SUPP last month, he said issues related to the BN-friendly party have been resolved by the state BN chairman, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, whereby UPP will leave it to the chief minister or Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to decide on the candidates for the coming general election.

“In the MoU, we promised to give our 100 per cent support irrespective of whom from any of the BN component parties is chosen as candidates.

“The same goes if a UPP candidate is selected; we will need strong support from all the BN component parties as well,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He added that UPP and BN component parties here have done a lot for the Miri parliamentary constituency even though the seat is currently under the opposition.

“We still carry on with our services, including serving the people and informing them of government policies as well as on what is happening at the federal level.

“Even though we have a representative in Parliament, there is a lack of information on Miri constituency. This is a big problem because if we do not know what is happening in Parliament from our MP, we will not know what is happening at the national level,” he said.

He pointed out that it is important to “have a strong MP”; hence the reason UPP will help any BN component party win back Miri from the opposition.

“I believe that all BN component parties, as well as BN-friendly UPP, have the desire to win back Miri in order to make Miri better and more developed.”

Bruce’s name is among those rumoured as a potential candidate from UPP for the Miri parliamentary constituency, along with three others from SUPP including Miri mayor Adam Yii.
