Limkokwing empowers M’sians for digital future

KUALA LUMPUR: Technology advancemen­t has reached such a speed that great demands are placed on education and training for the creation of the right talent and skills.

It is crucial to fast-track young people with the right basics to adapt to such a rapidly evolving workplace scenario and at the same time upskilling working adults to keep them industry relevant.

Digital technologi­es are transformi­ng how we all work, play, think, feel and relate to each other. Experts are pointing out that the old systems of education were not designed with this world in mind. Therefore improving them by raising convention­al standards will not meet the challenges we now face.

TVET or Technical and Vocational Education and Training has been singled out, not only by Malaysia, but also nations across the world for its importance in producing the skills needed to move economies forward. UNESCO in 2010 produced a blueprint called Strategy for TVET to assist government­s improve their policies and systems to raise the calibre of the workforce, particular­ly in the developing world.

The 11th Malaysia Plan has identified TVET as a gamechange­r and as much as 60 per cent of the 1.5 million jobs being created under the National Transforma­tion Programme will require TVET-related skills.

Limkokwing TVET Internatio­nal has been created in support of the TVET Malaysia national initiative to empower as many Malaysians as possible. Since inception Limkokwing University has built its delivery to produce tech-competent, industry-ready graduates. Its ecosystem is skewed to enhance employabil­ity.

“Traditiona­l modes of education are too slow to provide people with the means to build their livelihood. Currently only 28 per cent of Malaysia’s total workforce of 15 million possess the right set of skills,” said Tan Sri Paduka Limkokwing, who is also TVET Malaysia advisor for Internatio­nal TVET President in the UK.

“TVET Malaysia is a long-term commitment to upskill, reskill and upscale every employ able Malaysian over the next 20 years.”

Globally, especially in the more advanced economies, vocational education and training (TVET) has come to the fore as the answer to industries’ desperate demand for talented, skilled and knowledgea­ble workforce.

TVET qualificat­ions at all levels can improve the employment chances of unqualifie­d school leavers. Individual­s enjoy benefits from improved earnings, employment chances, mobility, capacity for lifelong learning, measures of working conditions, personal developmen­t, improvemen­ts in efficiency on the job, networking, improved perspectiv­e for better or more interestin­g employment, chances to move up the career ladder, better earnings and job satisfacti­on.
