Man fined RM7,000 for possession of air gun

TAWAU: A 59-year-old man was fined RM7,000, in default, seven months’ jail by a Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for possession of an air gun.

Magistrate Ferhanshah Farene imposed the sentence on Zulkarnia bin Muhammad who pleaded guilty to charge under Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1960 which provides seven years’ jail term or a fine of not more than RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.

On May 5, 2017 at about 1.52pm police found the air gun in a room on the first floor of a house at Kampung Muhibbah, Kuhara Road, that was kept on top of a closet.

The accused admitted the air gun belonged to him and he had no licence to keep it.

At the Sessions Court, an Indonesian man and a Filipino man were jailed for two months and ordered to be given two strokes of the cane for entering the country illegally.

Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud imposed the sentence on Mohd Amirul bin John, 21, and Oleh bin Dulan, 29, who pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigratio­n Act which provides for a fine of not more than RM10,000 or a jail term of not more than five years, or both, and whipping of not more than six strokes upon conviction.

Mohd Amirul was caught by police on crime prevention operation. He entered Tawau illegally with his mother in 2010 through Sg Nyamuk to look for a job.

Oleh was caught by marine police on March 28, 2018 at about 12.45pm at Sungai Serudong area while setting crab traps.

He admitted to entering the country illegally from Bungoa, the Philippine­s in 2010 and worked as a fisherman.

In 2015 he came to Tawau and stayed with family members at Sungai Imam.
