Man jailed seven years for helping to sell off stolen cellphone

TAWAU: A 56-year-old man was sentenced to seven years’ jail by the Sessions Court here yesterday for helping to dispose of a stolen Sony A1 cellphone.

Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud meted out the sentence on Azaman bin Johan who pleaded guilty to a charge under Section414 of the Penal Code which provides for seven years’ imprisonme­nt or a fine or both upon conviction.

The accused was also sentenced to two months’ jail under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigratio­n Act as he did not possess any identifica­tion documents and was ordered to be referred to the Immigratio­n Department after serving his sentence.

On March 15, at about 8.45am at the second floor of Kompleks Pertama, Mile 1 Apas, the accused helped to dispose of the stolen cellular phone by selling it to an unknown person. He was detained on April 2, at Block 5, Kampung Titingan and admitted taking the Sony A1 that was placed beside a pillow while the victim was sleeping.

At the same court, a 33-year-old Indonesian man was sentenced to three months’ jail and two strokes of the cane for entering the country, illegally.

Kasron bin Hassan pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigratio­n Act which provides for a fine of not more than RM10,000 or an imprisonme­nt not exceeding five years or both and whipping of not more than six strokes upon conviction.

The accused was detained by police after he failed to produce any identifica­tion documents on March 28, at about 1.45am in front of De Choice Hotel, Mosque Road.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Mohammad Fitri Wan Azizan prosecuted.

Meanwhile, in a Magistrate’s Court yesterday, a 24-year-old man was sentenced to 11 months’ jail for stealing a wristwatch and a silver ring.

Magistrate Ferhanshah Farene meted out the sentence on Junihan bin Sainuddin who pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code which provides for 10 years’ imprisonme­nt and can be fined and with whipping for a second offence.

The accused on April 1, at about 6.30am had stolen a Casio wristwatch and a silver ring belonging to Nasiruddin bin Mat Amin, 26, from Room 151, Kingston Hotel.
