Christian clinches crucial winning point for M’sia

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s top tennis player Christian Didier Chin continued his fine form for Malaysia at the Davis Cup Asia/ Oceania Zone Group III challenge in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Chin recovered from a wrist injury suffered a day earlier to clinch the crucial winning point for Malaysia against Pacific Oceania in Pool A of the challenge on Wednesday evening.

The national squad led by captain, Adam Jaya won 2-1 to record a second successive wins in the four-team Pool A.

More importantl­y the opening two wins put Malaysia on track to secure a top two finish in Pool A, thus advancing towards the playoffs.

Against Pacific Oceania, Chin again was entered as the second singles and he faced little problem to beat Colin Sinclair 6-3, 6-2 to make it 2-0 for Malaysia at the My Dinh Sports Complex.

Ahmad Deedat Abdul Razak delivered the first point when he defeated Matthew Stubbings 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

Muhammad-Ashaari Zainal Abidin and Syed Mohd Agil Syed Naguib played in the men’s doubles of the tie and despite giving their utmost best, they went down fighting 5-7, 6-0, 4-6 to Stubbings/Brett Baudinet.

For the record, Malaysia won the opening fixtures 3-0 against Cambodia on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Malaysia played their last group fixtures against joint leaders Vietnam late yesterday.

The top two countries in each pool will play in the crossover playoffs to decide the two teams getting promoted to the Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in 2019.
