Ground breaking ceremony for mushroom cultivation facility
KOTA KINABALU: A ground breaking ceremony was held at Kampung Tudan between the villagers, Hopes Malaysia, and Gammerlite Sdn Bhd to signify the initiation of the mushroom cultivation facility construction. The facility is part of a community and social entrepreneurship project entitled ‘Kampung Tudan Sustainable Mushroom Cultivation Project’ carried out by Hopes Malaysia. The ground breaking ceremony was officiated by the Directors of Gammerlite Sdn Bhd, Ratina Idris and Johny John witnessed by Sam Lee, founder of Hopes Malaysia, June Wong from Hopes Malaysia, Kampung Tudan representative, Kipol Suraq and the villagers.
Hopes Malaysia, a local based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), had on July 2017 successfully constructed a new and sustainable water supply system for the village. The village had been struggling without clean water supply upon the notorious 2015 Sabah Earthquake. Kampung Tudan Sustainable Mushroom Cultivation Project is the second phase development by Hopes Malaysia which aims to alleviate the village from existing hardcore poverty via sustainable economic and environmentally friendly effort. Through the project, an ecofriendly mushroom cultivation house will be built to produce various species of mushrooms which will be sold directly to the local market without any third party agent. The cultivated mushroom will not apply any chemical compound or fertilizer to guarantee food safety for the end user. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on March 7, 2018 between Hopes Malaysia and Sabah Oriental Hotel for securing the purchase of mushroom by the hotel.
Following up from the MoU, the ground breaking ceremony represents another crucial milestone for the project in initiating the facility construction. Gammerlite Sdn Bhd, acting on corporate social responsibility, funded this project to flatten the 4,000 square foot land allocated for the cultivation facility. Prior to that, a formal agreement was signed between the Kampung Tudan land owner and Hopes Malaysia to secure the land usage for the next 15 years. The land flattening process will be completed over the next months.
According to Gammerlite Sdn Bhd, community projects should emphasize on sustainable impact ensuring full benefit being created for the targeted community. The company hopes that this contribution can become a small step to inspire more cooperate involvement to create a better tomorrow for society.
To raise funds to support the construction, a public fund raising campaign will be held next at Imago Shopping Mall here from April 28 to May 1 and May 26 to 31. The public are encouraged to visit the fund raising booth for more information on the project. The facility construction is expected to be complete by the end of the year with the sales of the first batch of mushroom to commence by early next year.
