KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia Chinese Tourism Association (MCTA) Sabah Chapter chairman Lawrence Wong hopes that the new Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Christina Liew will uncover new tourist attractions and improve tourism facilities to take Sabah tourism to greater heights.

He was confident that Liew, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, would do her job well.

Wong was pleased to learn that the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal has appointed a Chinese elected representative to head the tourism ministry.

“After more than 20 years, we finally have a woman as the Deputy Chief Minister who shoulders the heavy responsibility as the Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister.”

He said China-nationals constituted the majority of inbound tourists to Sabah and Liew could play a significant role to boost the tourism industry.

“I believe Liew, as a senior lawyer, has the capability to lead the tourism ministry and establish good rapport with her counterparts all over the world to bring our tourism industry to the next level.”

Wong added that there were a lot of potential tourism resources which had not been tapped into in Sabah.

He hoped Liew could look into developing more tourism products and improve the related facilities.

On another note, Wong said the former Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun had done a good job to promote and develop the tourism industry during his term.
