Cops trying to drill into old safe at Najib’s house – lawyer

KUALA LUMPUR: Investigators are trying to drill into a 20-yearold safe in former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's home after the key could not be located, said lawyer Datuk Harpal Singh Grewal.

Police have been at Najib's mansion in Taman Duta here since Wednesday night as part of a larger investigation into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

“The keys have been misplaced and this drilling has caused unnecessary mental distress to Najib's family who were denied the right to conduct their religious obligations on the first day of Ramadan.

“The police have finished the major part of their searches, but they are now attempting to unlock this safe that has not been open for two decades and long before Najib became PM... God know what's in there,” Harpal told reporters outside Najib's home yesterday.

He also reiterated that police have only taken several boxes of apparel, handbags and gifts from the compound, and not any documents.

The lawyer further insisted that none of the seized items incriminated Najib or his family members in any wrongdoing.

“It is a normal search warrant to carry out a search in accordance with the Anti Money-Laundering Act,” he said.

Asked if Najib was under house arrest, he said no, and that Najib was free to come and go as he wishes.
