KOTA KINABALU: Team CTG Keningau are champions of the President’s Cup Net Ball Tournament that concluded at the Tun Adnan Sports Complex at Yayasan Sabah on Sunday.

They defeated Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) 22-18 in a thrilling final to emerge as winners of the Open category and clinched the Chendramata Sinteh Cup.

In the play-off, Pradians beat Kiwi 27-13 for third spot.

Aside from winning the champions title, CTG Keningau also won the Best Player award through Emma Nadia John, while the Top Scorer award went to Farha Farhani Fadharahman of Pradians, who netted 93 points. Kiwi won the Fair Play award.

In the Under-21 league competition, Kota Belud (Kontena) emerged as champions followed by K2 One, Old Sabah College Alumni (OSCA) and K3 Two.

Kontena team captain, Bibi Nordiana Yahya, was named best player, while Wan Nur Aina Maddhiah Wan Marijan from OSCA was the top scorer. K3 Two won the Fair Play award.

A total of 19 teams took part in the tournament organised by Sabah Net Ball Association SABANA. It was the ninth edition of the tournament which was held annually since 2010.

Meanwhile, organising chairperson, Babby Freskayani, said this year the tournament failed to achieve its objective as it was hindered by the general elections, which caused many teams to come unprepared.

“Nonetheless, the tournament has became more popular as it attracted entries from Miri, Sarawak in addition to teams from all over Sabah,” she said.

In her opening speech, Chendramata said, the main objective of the tournament was to unearth new talents, especially under-21 players.

“Aside from that, the competitive rivalry also helped to strengthen rapport among teams, affiliates, players and officials while forging unity among women in the community,” she said.

She said after this, SABANA would be organising the Toh Puan Cup Tournament in October which is open to private and public sector organisations and agencies alike.

Among the teams that took part in this year’s President’s Cuptournament are SIDMA College, EDU Team (Tuaran), Gombunan (Tambunan) and others from Kota Kinabalu and surrounding areas, including Team MGK.
