Police probe 100 GE14-linked cases in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU: Police are investigating more than 100 cases that were lodged between April 7 and May 17 in connection with the 14th general election.
Sabah CID chief SAC Jauteh Dikun yesterday said a total of 121 investigation papers have been opened for various offences, including 10 commercial crimes, the destruction of election machinery or items, and slander.
“These investigation papers are from a total of 281 reports received statewide,” he said.
He said the remaining reports will be looked into later, as the police are focusing on cases which have complete information and are more urgent first.
SAC Jauteh said from the reports, Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu and Semporna topped the list of cases investigated.
“Nineteen involve the destruction or vandalising of election related materials, followed by 10 cases of slander or personal attacks and six cases of incidents involving giving or receiving election money,” he said.
Meanwhile, only one man has been arrested for election-related offences.
“This man from Bongawan, Papar, was nabbed on May 1 for impersonating a policeman,” he said.
He said the man claimed that he had dressed up as a policeman so that it would be easy for him to manage the traffic and parking for a function at the area during that time.
