Sandakan Toastmasters eager to work with ministry

-

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Toastmasters Club hopes to work together with the Youth and Sports Ministry to enhance speaking and leadership skills among local youths.

Its president, Peter Soo, said he was happy to find that Tanjong Papat assemblyman Frankie Poon Ming Fung had been appointed as the Minister of Youth and Sports and was looking forward to working together with the ministry.

Soo also stressed on the importance of speaking and leadership skills for youths, adding that such skills would give them a competitive edge in their education and career.

"I have observed so many youths these days who are afraid to voice out their opinion or speak up in public. Very few (of youths) have the courage to take up leadership roles as most youths are not able to handle criticism.

"I believe Toastmasters can help in this area, as we have programmes and activities that provide the opportunity for people to practise both impromptu as well as prepared speeches," he said, adding that if the club worked with the Youth and Sports Ministry, the objective of the club could reach more local youths.

The Toastmasters programme would also enable members to learn to give constructive evaluations, Soo disclosed.

"Overall, the Toastmasters Club provides an excellent platform for personal development, especially in the areas of public speaking and leadership," he said.

Soo expressed hopes that more people will join the Toastmasters to develop their confidence, which in turn will help them to become better speakers and leaders.

Sandakan Toastmasters welcome anyone who is 18 years and above to join as a member. Log in to www.facebook.com/sandakantoastmastersclub for more information.
