No reason to keep blocking Sarawak Report, Medium – MCMC

PUTRAJAYA: The Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has stressed that the move to block any website was done based on the laws of the country and with the intention to maintain public order.

The Commission, in a statement posted on its Facebook page yesterday, said digital content with pornographic, offensive and indecent elements, will be blocked if there were complaints from the public.

“However, the blocking of the websites will be reviewed and if the reasons or criteria for the blocking are no longer applicable in the current situation, the restrictions will be withdrawn.

“In the case of Sarawak Report and Medium, there is no reason to keep blocking the sites as the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) report has been made public,” the statement said.

Last Tuesday, Auditor-General Tan Sri Madinah Mohamad announced that the 1MDB Audit Report, which had been classified “Secret” on Jan 22, 2016, had been declassified.

The MCMC explained that in the case of live.undi.info website, complaints received from members of the public include the claim that the results or information published on the website were inaccurate.

“However, after reviewing the published content, restrictions were withdrawn as the criteria used for the previous blocking process were not applicable in the current situation,” the statement said.
