Yoong Hanifah siblings show improved results in Florida

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The twoweek training at Cory Pickos ski site in Florida pay off, after the Yoong Hanifah siblings produced vastly improved results at the Florida Inboards Record tournament.

The 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games (KL2017) triple gold medallist, Aaliyah Yoong, led the way after finishing second in the girl’s Under-17 (U-17) jump with a distance of 34.9m in the two-day meet, last week.

According to the statement issued by Malaysian Waterski and Wakeboard Federation (MWWF), it was a new national record for Aaliyah when she rewrote her previous national record of 32.8m.

Aaliyah also equalled her national mark of 0.5/55/12 in slalom although she eventually only finished fifth.

The 14-year-old national water skier also produced her season’s best score of 6,960 to finish second in tricks, behind American Kennedy Hansen who scored 7,910.

“She did well in tricks and the only drawback was she fell on her toes so she could not get past 7,600 points. However she has gained 4kg in the past 12 months and she has more power as shown in her flips, jumps and in slalom.

“Now she has to get back to her former toe tricking speed in order to get back in form,” said national water ski head coach, Hanifah Yoong.

The KL 2017 men’s water ski tricks gold medallist, Adam Yoong, smashed his national record for the second time this year by scoring a total of 4,750 to win the boy’s U-13 event.

The new score is not only a personal best for 10 year-old Adam but it is also a new Asian U-17 record.

Meanwhile, Aiden, 12, did not win but he still put up a good show to finish behind Adam with a new personal best score of 4,030.

The Yoong Hanifah siblings will resume training at the Santa Rosa Beach (Florida) for two weeks before heading to Callaway Gardens, Atlanta where Aaliyah is due to compete at the Nautique Waterski US Masters from May 25-27.
