Federal Cabinet should have 20% East M’sian reps — DAP

-

KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Cabinet should consist of 20 per cent East Malaysian representatives, said Sabah Democratic Action Party (DAP) secretary Chan Foong Hin.

He said Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) and Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) have both submitted names for Federal Cabinet posts to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for consideration.

“Warisan has submitted their names and so have we.”

DAP won three parliamentary seats in Sabah during the 14th General Election (GE14), namely Kota Kinabalu (Chan), Sandakan (Stephen Wong) and Tenom (Noorita Sual).

Of the three, Stephen has been appointed as state assemblyman and currently helms the Ministry of Health and People’s Wellbeing Ministry.

Chan pointed out that Mahathir has downsized the Federal Cabinet to 25 members, with the possibly of being expanded to 30 members.

He said the new Federal Government would no longer maintain the previous cabinet of 35 ministries.

With the downsized Federal Cabinet, Chan said the big picture should be considered instead of zeroing in on the number of cabinet ministers appointed.

Nonetheless, he said the Federal Cabinet should have 20 per cent East Malaysian representatives.

He also expressed confidence in Mahathir’s leadership.

“While it will be good to have representation in the cabinet, a non-federal minister can do an equally good job at serving the rakyat.”
