KOTA KINABALU: A man was fined RM1,800, in default, three months' jail by the Magistrate's Court here yesterday for giving a senior police officer a false written information.

Magistrate Afiq Agoes meted out the sentence on Join Ongikal, 39, after the latter admitted to a charge under Section 182 of the Penal Code which is punishable by a jail term of up to six months or a fine or both, upon conviction.

The accused admitted to have given the 32-year-old cop the false information at the Penampang police station on March 4.

In mitigation, the unrepresented accused urged the court to give him a lower amount of fine on the grounds that he has no permanent job.

In reply, prosecuting officer Inspector Lim Swee Beng prayed for an adequate sentence to be imposed on the accused.

In an unrelated case, two foreigners, both women, were each fined RM1,500, in default, three months imprisonment by the same court for possessing 192 pieces of illegal lottery tickets.

Yulpin, 22, and Annul Rayyan Mobin, 28, pleaded guilty to their joint charge framed under Section 9 (1) of the Common Gaming House Act which provides for a maximum fine of RM5,000 or a jail term of up to six months or both, upon conviction.

The duo were arrested for committing the offences at a shop in Penampang on October 14, 2017.

The court also ordered the two accused persons to be referred to the Immigration Department for further action.
