Move to cut parking rate in Sandakan

-

SANDAKAN: Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, George Hiew, and Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) president Datuk James Wong have both agreed to propose a revision of the parking fee rate presently charged in Sandakan town.

According to Hiew, the proposal, which is still under active discussion, would be to revise downwards the fee rate for parking spaces in Sandakan town.

“As promised, we will revise downwards the parking fee rate within 100 days. Just wait for the surprise,” he said.

Hiew, who is also the Karamunting assemblyman, disclosed that the proposal will include revising the parking fee rate for parking spaces marked red from RM1 per hour to RM1 per two hours.

“This proposal is to solve the problems faced in town, in view of the fact that there are now lesser people coming to town and the huge number of people who refused to pay their compounds.

“To date, more than RM800,000 in compounds have yet to be paid since the parking coupon system was implemented here in April 2017. For this and in conjunction with the coming Raya festival, we will also be considering offering amnesty for payment of compounds. This will be announced before the Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

The proposal will be presented at the next cabinet meeting, said Hiew, during a press conference after a dinner gathering with Wong on Thursday night.
