Food regulations also apply to Ramadan bazaar traders – Health official
SARIKEI: Ramadan bazaar traders are still subject to Food Cleanliness Regulations 2009, just as much as those running eateries like coffee shops and restaurants.
In this regard, divisional Health Department epidemiology officer Dr Emmanuel Joseph Fong said the requirements had been emphasised to the traders during the briefing conducted prior to the issuance of trading permits.
“It is mandatory for food handlers to attend the accredited food handling course at least once, as well as to undergo medical check-ups every year and obtain anti-typhoid vaccination every three years.
“It goes without saying that food handlers must observe and practise strict personal hygiene; they are required to wear proper head coverings like caps or headscarf, appropriate footwear and aprons. They are strongly advised against wearing rings or other accessories when preparing food,” he told reporters after leading the department's enforcement staff to conducts check on Ramadan bazaar stalls here on Thursday.
Adding on, Dr Fong clarified that any action taken by the authorities is not meant to make things difficult for the traders; rather, it serves to ensure that all requirements slated for the safety of consumers are being adhered to.
He also said the consumers could play a part when it comes to food hygiene.
“To avoid food poisoning, you should thoroughly check the food items by smelling or tasting before eating them.”
Dr Fong and his team conducted checks on 150 stalls over the past three days where they did not only ensure that the traders would strictly observe the requirements stipulated under the Food Cleanliness Regulations 2009, but also issued certificates to be displayed at these stalls.
