Sinkhole near school hall poses danger to students, teachers

-

KUCHING: A sinkhole said to have been caused by heavy downpour during the past few days near SMK Sungai Tapang hall is posing a danger to students and teachers passing by the affected area.

This was disclosed in a press release yesterday by Stampin member of parliament and Kota Sentosa state assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen’s special assistant Abdul Aziz Isa.

He added the rainwater had gradually eroded the soil underneath the drain which in turn had caused damage to part of the structure next to the stairway.

In a move to rectify the problem temporarily, the school had covered part of the damaged structure using roof zinc to prevent the water pouring under the damaged drain which can lead to bigger sinkholes. Since the stairway is near to the school hall and Bloc B building, it could pose a serious danger to students if no actions are taken by the relevant authority.

For safety reason, the school also had put up warning signage to warn those of the danger at the damaged site.

“On behalf of the school and PTA, I’ve submitted two letters to the State Education Department and Public Works Department (Civil Engineering and Structure Branch) for immediate action. I hope that the two relevant authorities mentioned above will not delay doing the repair work for the safety of the students and the teachers in the school,” Abdul Aziz said.
