Little change in prices, claims teacher

-

KOTA KINABALU: The implementation of the zero percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) has brought about little change in the prices of goods, according to a teacher.

Due to the escalation of prices, a 46-year-old teacher Hjh Naemah Morobistah said she felt no impact from the removal of GST.

“It is true that with the implementation of zero GST, the prices of goods are reduced a bit.

“However, the prices of goods are higher as compared to last year. So, even without the GST, it has no impact but if the prices are lowered, perhaps the impact would be more significant,” she said.

Naemah, who teaches Bahasa Malaysia at a secondary school in Semporna, was met at Jakel Silk House Alarm Mesra here yesterday during the ‘Jakel bubur lambuk' distribution program with Adabi.

She came with her husband and two daughters to buy clothes for the upcoming Aidilfitri.

Meanwhile, two siblings, Fatinah Hashim, 22, and Farahin Hashim, 19, said consumers should be wise in their spending although GST has now been abolished since June 1.

“Since the 0% GST, it seems that people are starting to go shopping. Facebook and Instagram postings are all talking about shopping.

“We as consumers are surely affected by the price drop. It is really helpful, especially during this upcoming Hari Raya.

“Even if goods are now GST free, I think consumers need to spend their money wisely and go for affordable goods,” she said.

Fatinah and Farahin are currently studying at a local university here pursuing their bachelor's degree and diploma, respectively.

They came here on Friday from Sandakan to look for Aidilfitri outfits where Jakel was one of the shops they went.
