BEIJING: Yang Mi’s latest TV series Legend of Fuyao has opened with 350 million views.

Co-starring Ethan Ruan, the fantasy drama aired on Zhejiang Satellite TV and easily secured the top spot among viewers tuning in at the time.

Industry insiders are already predicting that it would even overshadow her previous hit series Eternal Love.

Viewers were thrilled by the playful chemistry between Yang Mi and Ethan, whose banter seemed more engaging than the melodramatic love story found in Eternal Love.

In the new series, Yang Mi’s character comes across as being courageous in love, and having the moral courage to speak up against injustices. The drama will revolve upon the development of Yang Mi’s character, as she overcomes a series of obstacles.

Undoubtedly, this is a welcome departure from Yang Mi’s former roles in which her characters were perceived as being much weaker.

The 66-episode drama is adapted from the novel Empress Fuyao, which narrates the story of a seemingly simple girl, Meng Fuyao (Yang Mi), who makes a startling transformation into a martial arts expert.

On a journey to collect secret orders of the five kingdoms, Fuyao meets and falls in love with Crown Prince of Tianquan (Ethan Ruan).

Together, they battle the complicated politics and power plays between the different forces. Amidst the battle of authority between Zhangsun Wuji and Zhan Beiye, Fuyao was revealed as the daughter of the King of Xuanji.

With the help of her loyal companions, she sets out to unravel the heinous plot of the ancient firmament. Fuyao ultimately destroys the evils of the world to usher in an era of peace.
