Road maintenance contractors under scrutiny

-

TAWAU: The Sabah Infrastructure Development Ministry will monitor utility companies that had been awarded contracts in the previous administration to maintain roads in the state.

Its minister Datuk Peter Anthony said legal action would be taken against underperforming contractors if necessary.

“There have been some problems pertaining to maintenance, which we are looking into and monitoring,” he told Bernama when contacted.

He said the ministry was committed to providing convenience, comfort and safe roads for the people in the state and as such, many of the roads were in the process of maintenance.

Peter, who is also Melalap assemblyman, said the ministry was also aware that some roads were without or had poor lighting due to poor maintenance.

Meanwhile, Silam MP Mohamad Din Ketapi said the people would be able to enjoy good road connectivity after the completion of the Pan Borneo Highway.

“The project will proceed. Hopefully, it will be completed on schedule,” he said.

Road users in the east coast of Sabah had previously highlighted the problem of poorly maintained roads which posed a danger to motorists, and expressed hope that the matter would be viewed seriously by the new state government under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal. - Bernama
