The fifty most inventive projects were displayed at the multipurpose hall of First City UC. It included the finest projects from students pursuing their final year BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and BSc (Hons) Software Engineering programmes. Selected projects from students who are studying the Diploma in Information Technology programme were also showcased, as the university college continued to celebrate the power of innovation in these future engineers, programmers and IT specialists.

The annual Innovation Day is organised every year as it serves as a platform for students to connect with the industry, potential employers and partners who have longstanding relationships with the institution. The projects on display during the event exhibition often impress the industry partners that some of the students even receive offers of employment on the spot.

“It is a good platform for me to expose my project and anticipate for a job offer,” said Alice Foo Qian Hui, a final year student from the BA (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering programme.

The attendees were enticed with a warm welcome by the Performing Arts Club of First City UC. The group dancers of ten students livened up the mood at the event and brought the atmosphere in the hall to another level. A welcome speech was delivered by Dr Mak followed by Dr Christine.

“External education is important for the students as it exposes them to the real world, it’s a way to train students on what to look forward to in the industry,” said Teo.

The event featured an interesting talk on ‘Challenges Faced by the Engineering Profession in an Open Market Economy’ by Ir Rocky Wong, a special guest from the Board of Engineers Malaysia. He imparted his knowledge and experiences on engineering and how students could overcome and be able to manage challenges that they will be facing in the career line.

He encouraged students who have graduated as engineers to register with the Board of Engineers Malaysia.

“Cross border certifications begin from domestic registration,” said Rocky.

Some of the students’ projects were Design of a Climbing Robot, OOTD - Social Fashion Platform with Augmented Reality, Indoor Positioning System using Wi-Fi Localization Technique, Eye of Horus - An Application of Face Recognition & Steganography and Performance Evaluation of Various Modulation Techniques for Light Fidelity (LiFi).
