Lawyer released after remand application rejected
KAJANG: The police have released lawyer and activist Siti Zabedah Kassim or better known as Siti Kassim after the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday rejected an application for her remand.
Kajang district police chief ACP Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yusoff said the police, however, were still investigating her case under Section 363 and Section 186 of the Penal Code for alleged abduction and obstructing a civil servant from discharging his duties.
“The court has rejected the police’s application for a remand order and we have carried out our duty according to the jurisdiction allocated to us, hence, the police have duly released Siti Kasim yesterday afternoon.
“The investigation is still ongoing and it is expected to be extended to the public prosecutor soon,” he said when met by reporters here yesterday.
Ahmad Dzaffir also denied allegations that the police had no jurisdiction to detain Siti Kassim and her client as the action taken by the police were in accordance with the law provided under the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code.
“On Siti Kassim’s arrest yesterday, the police have taken steps in accordance with existing laws as provided under Section 363 and Section 186 of the Penal Code and we do not choose any parties to detain,” he said.
Meanwhile, Siti Kassim, who was also present at the press conference, said she was ready to cooperate with the police on the case.
“I am grateful to the court for refusing the remand order application, because what I have done is in line with my job as a lawyer, I was not trying to cause any trouble and I will cooperate with the police,” she said.
Siti Kassim was detained at the Kajang district police headquarters at 12.40am yesterday for allegedly obstructing a public servant from discharging his duties following a police report lodged by a woman claiming the lawyer has kidnapped her 24-year-old daughter on Thursday.
Siti Kasim was alleged to have abducted the woman, who is also her client, while she was undergoing a psychiatric examination at the Kajang Hospital and was later rescued by the police at a condominium unit in Segambut on Sunday night. - Bernama
