-

SANDAKAN: A 32-year-old local man made an attempt to commit suicide claiming that he is hearing voices and seeing shadows.

Police arrested him yesterday after his attempt to commit suicide on June 4, 2018. The arrest was made following a police report lodged by a doctor from psychiatry ward of the Duchess of Kent hospital here on Tuesday.

According to acting Sandakan police chief, Superintendent Abdul Fuad bin Abdul Malek, after further investigation, police found that the man had attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself with a piece of cloth in his bedroom.

His attempt was caught by his father who immediately cut the piece of cloth from around his neck.

The man was then given initial treatment by a medical team when they arrived at the location at Kampung Pangiran Galpam, mile 7 here. He was then sent to the hospital for further treatment.

“We found out that the man has been receiving treatment at the psychiatry ward here monthly since 2017. He had told the doctor that he wanted to kill himself as he was suffering from severe headaches and was hearing voices and seeing shadows.

“The man is currently in a stable state and had tested negative for drugs,” Abdul Fuad said.

The man was arrested under Section 309 of the Penal Code but subsequently released on police bail and a local surety.
