SANDAKAN: New board of directors and officers of Sandakan Rotary Club 20182019 were appointed during its 65th Installation Night cum 64th Anniversary event held at the Sabah Hotel here on Saturday night.

Vincent Chua Soon Jui was appointed as the new president, replacing Eleanor Wong Yung Sin, who now becomes the immediate past president. Dr Lau Kee Oon became the vice president while the positions for honorary secretary and honorary treasurer are now held by Tsen Kok Yin and Chong Ket Vui, respectively.

Eight other positions are also filled with new faces in the club as announced during the event.

Vincent Chua, in his speech, said that he hoped the members would appreciate each other's efforts, make a change and be an inspiration to others in the club, in line with the theme of the installation night, ‘Be the Inspiration'.

“We will do our best to enhance the image of the Rotary Club by engaging more meaningful and sustainable projects as well as humanitarian services for our community,” he said.

The event was graced by Sabah Chief Conservator of Forests, Datuk Sam Mannan.

In his opening speech, Sam shared the conservation effort done by the Forestry Department under his leadership. He said that since 2004, the department has increased the momentum in conservation and sustainable forest management.

“We had targeted for 30 percent of Sabah (2.2 million hectares) to be conserved and preserved. Currently, we are at 26 percent (1.9 million hectares). We will be able to reach our target within two years,” he said.

Sam said that the Rotary Club has been the department's partner in conservation and he hopes the cooperation between the two would continue.
