Mas Ermieyati quits Umno, to be Independent MP

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Puteri Umno chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin yesterday announced that she is quitting Umno and will represent her Masjid Tanah constituency as an Independent Member of Parliament.

“I hereby announce that I, along with my loyal followers, are quitting Umno. We made this decision sincerely without force or threat from any quarters.

“From today onwards, I will be an Independent MP and will continue to play a role in criticising and advising the government so as to provide check and balance on policies introduced by the Pakatan Harapan-led government without being bound by the code of ethics of any political party,” she said in a press statement.

The statement, however, did not disclose the actual number of her followers who quit the party with her.

Mas Ermieyati said the decision was somehow due to their disappointment to see at least 70 percent fresh faces being elected at the party polls on Saturday.

Mas Ermieyati said she had hoped that the party polls would steer Umno to a new direction, but the results, reactions and sentiments showed that most of its members were still suffering from denial syndrome.

“I believe the existing Umno leadership is still in denial to the fact that the people have rejected Umno because they thought Umno is just a victim of the people's hatred towards Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. The 1MDB scandal has caused Malaysians to ridicule Umno.
