Sandakan’s Remy emerges as new Mr Sabah
KOTA KINABALU: Remy Rahim Bungkal has been crowned the new Mr Sabah after his Champion of Champions victory at the Mr Sabah Bodybuilding and Physique Championship at Pan Borneo Hotel in Putatan, near here on Saturday.
The Sandakan athlete won in the closely contested main event of the night which featured seven other category winners, including former champions Henro Lee and Riano Engah.
Remy, who succeeded last year’s Mr Sabah winner Mohd Riduan Kassim after the latter opted out of the just concluded championship, made it into Champion of Champions after winning the middleweight category.
The other Champion of Champions finalists were Abdul Rahim Atin who won the bantamweight title, Jamain Korop (light flyweight), Fredolin Kimin (flyweight), multiple former Mr Sabah winner Henro (lightweight), George Saligi (welterweight), Riano Engah (light middleweight) and Chok Lei Fung (light heavyweight).
The other main awards presented on the night saw Abdul Rahim win the Most Improved Bodybuilders title, Christie Cletus (Best Poser) and Super Room Indoor Gym Brotherhood (Team Title).
Meanwhile, five finals were also held shortly after the prejudging conducted at the ITCC Mall earlier in the day.
Kota Marudu-born Maxmalcolm Symond representing DMD Fitness Menggatal retained the Men’s Junior category title and Yakob Mengkabong winning the Master category.
Shelen Aderina Kok clinched top honours in the Women’s Physique category,, Mixlee Ricko Mumin (Men’s Physique 170cm and below) and Reynold Kok (Men’s Physique 170cm and above).
The Sabah Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) organised the state level championship with support from the Sabah Sports Council (SSC).
The state association will be using the championship to select athletes to represent Sabah at the Mr Malaysia championship in Malacca from August 17 to 19.
SSC director Terrance Pudin, who represented Youth and Sports Minister Frankie Poon, graced the championship. SBBA President Joannes Stanelous was also present.
