Duo deny cheating

KOTA KINABALU: Two men claimed trial in the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday to separate charges of cheating.

Abdul Basid Abdul Mutalib, 63, and Nijar Sazali, 33, who appeared before magistrate Afiq Agoes, were charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

The indictment carries a jail term of up to 10 years and with whipping and also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

In the first case, Abdul Basid was accused of deceiving a man, 30, by making the victim into believing that he would sell alcohol drinks (beer) which were seized items by the Customs Department and induced the victim to pay him RM3,700 as a deposit for the purchase at a car park of a supermarke­t here at 3.30pm on May 4.

In the second case, Nijar had allegedly cheated two men by saying that he was a lawyer for Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) and could help both the victims in managing the release of their kids.

Nijar was alleged to have induced the two victims to give him RM3,750 and RM800 for the release of their child, respective­ly and both the alleged offences were committed at the Suhakam office here on July 10, 2017.

The magistrate fixed July 10 for the case management of both the accused persons and Abdul Basid was released on a bail of RM2,800 while Nijar was granted RM4,000 for both his charges, all desposited with two local sureties.
