Family Planning Association receives RM124,000 Japanese govt assistance
KOTA KINABALU: The government of Japan extended a RM124,000 assistance to the Sarawak Family Planning Association.
The grant was used for purchasing an ultrasound scan machine and two autoclaves which will provide healthcare service for women in Sarawak.
This project was completed recently and handed over to the Sarawak Family Planning Association on July 5 in the presence of Hiroko Matsuo, the Head of Consular Office of Japan, on behalf of the government of Japan and Wee Chong Hui, chairman of the Sarawak Family Planning Association.
“Japanese Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Projects (GGP) is one of the aid schemes to meet the basic human needs such as projects that are highly beneficial at the grass-roots level and those that require timely support on humanitarian grounds,” said Hiroko.
“I would say that this particular aid for this project is an exemplification of the goodwill of the Japanese people toward the people in Sarawak. I sincerely hope these machines will be effectively utilized for the betterment of family life in Sarawak for many years. At the same time, I hope that this project will be long remembered by the people as a symbol of friendship between Japan and Sarawak,” she said.
Since 1989, under the GGP, the government of Japan has extended the assistance in Sabah and Sarawak for 51 small but socially important projects, including electrification by solar system, improvement of the medical facilities and so on. So far these projects cost RM6.7 million in total.
The Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu is always responsive to good proposals from NGOs and other non-profit associations to carry out the project under the GGP.
It also donated a van and ultrasound scan machine to the Sabah Family Planning Association in May 2016.
