Filipino jailed for shopliftin­g

KOTA KINABALU: A Filipino was jailed for 15 months by the Magistrate's Court here yesterday for stealing shirts from two shops.

Magistrate Afiq Agoes imposed the sentence on Abdullah Alam, 20, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

The accused admitted to stealing five shirts from two shops at a shopping complex here on June 29.

Prosecutin­g officer Inspector Lim Swee Beng told the court that the accused was arrested for taking the shirts without paying.

In an unrelated case, a foreign man was fined RM8,800, in default, 10 months in jail by the same court here for possessing 4.96 grams of syabu.

Mijan Mandangan pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 12 (3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which is punishable by a maximum fine of RM100,000 or a jail term of up to five years, upon conviction.

The court also ordered Mijan to be referred to the Immigratio­n Department thereafter for further action.

Meanwhile, four persons were convicted for separate charges of consuming syabu.

Darwina Ibrahim was fined RM1,700 and Terence Francis received RM1,600 fine, both in default, eight months in jail while Julkarnain Siddek and Mohd Hayerul Ezam were each jailed for nine months after they pleaded guilty to their charges under Section 15 (1) (a) of the same Act which is punishable by a fine of up to RM5,000 or a maximum jail of two years, upon conviction.
