-

TAWAU: The Social Security Organization (Socso) handed funeral benefit to the wife of salesman Hiew Nyuk Wei who was one of the four persons killed in an accident in Tawau on Sunday.

Socso Tawau head Mariam Hassan said after learning of the fatal accident involving four vehicles at Chong Thien Vun Road on Sunday at 1.15am, Socso checked through its ASSIST Perkeso system and found that Hiew was one of the victims who was eligible for the benefit.

She said Socso took proactive steps by using the information from news clipping, photo, and asked the heirs to send a copy of the victim’s identity card through WhatsApp to enable Socso to register the case under SIKAP system and made immediate payment for funeral arrangement.

A cheque for RM2,000 was handed to the victim’s widow Ng Pei Woon, 25, at the undertaker, Mile 5, Apas yesterday. Apart from that, under the wife’s pension benefit, the late Hiew is eligible to receive monthly Socso interest for life and their fouryear-old son until he reaches 21 years old.

Hiew, Clarence Wong Vun Kit, 21, student Dickson Lim Kien Shing, 16, and private company worker Chong Wei Can, 21, were killed while shopkeeper Chin Guan Xiong, 20, suffered a broken left leg when a car plowed into them at the parking area of BDC Commercial Centre at Jalan Chong Thien Vun here early Sunday morning.

The Toyota Vios car driven by a 34-year-old woman also rammed into a Toyota Hiace vehicle and two cars, namely a Perodua Bezza and a Perodua Myvi.

Tawau District Police chief ACP Fadil Marsus said initial investigations revealed the incident was due to the negligence of the woman, who was believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police have obtained a court order to remand the driver for four days from Monday to assist in investigations into the fatal accident.
