Wandering baby elephant rescued in Tawau
KOTA KINABALU: A two to three-week-old male baby elephant found wandering alone at the Ladang Brumas Plantation in Tawau has been rescued.
According to Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) Public Relations Officer Siti Nur’Ain Ampuan Acheh, the Tawau Wildlife Office received a report from the plantation concerning the baby elephant on July 10 at about 3pm.
She said that no other elephant group was sighted.
Following the report, the Wildlife District office sent its personnel to investigate and rescue the baby elephant weighing 95.5 kg.
The baby elephant was found weak but was aware of its surrounding, she said.
It was brought to Tawau and fed with milk formula as well as fluids intra-venously.
It was then transported to Sepilok and arrived around 5.30am on Thursday.
A full medical check-up performed found the baby elephant alert and receptive to drinking milk, although looking slightly dehydrated.
He was also given oral electrolytes to address the dehydration.
Some small wounds were found in different parts of his body and were being treated.
