Lahad Datu crime rate down 32.28%

LAHAD DATU: Lahad Datu police has shown remarkable performanc­e in maintainin­g a reduction of crime rate for five consecutiv­e years, including 2018.

Disclosing this here yesterday, Lahad Datu police chief, ACP Hamzah Ahmad, said, for the period from January to June 2018, statistics have shown a reduction of 32.28 percent in crime rate compared to 2017. Hamzah said, a total of 107 cases were recorded during the period, while 158 cases were recorded for the same period in 2017.

Elaboratin­g further, Hamzah said, crime cases related to housebreak­ing recorded a drop of 23 cases with only 22 cases recorded this year. He said cases relating to motorcycle theft also recorded a drop of 10 cases with only 14 cases recorded in 2018.

“During this period, a total of 884 cases were recorded by the narcotics unit with 566 arrests. Of this number, cases relating to supply and distributi­on showed a drop of 23 cases with 57 cases recorded in 2018,” he disclosed.

According to Hamzah, the narcotics unit should empower their efforts by continuing the operations, targeting hot spots and paying attention to people’s complaint. He said, continuous efforts should be maintained in order to combat drug activities in this district.

Meanwhile, Hamzah disclosed that the traffic unit recorded 493 accident cases during the period. He said although there was an increase of 73 cases compared to 2017, fatal accidents recorded a drop of three cases with 10 cases recorded this year.

“A total of 12,016 summons were issued during this period showing an increase of 5,450 compared to only 6,566 summons issued during the same period in 2017,” he said.

In his speech, Hamzah reminded his men to avoid negative activities such as corruption, drug abuse, gambling and other activities that could tarnish the image of the police.

He also called on his men to adhere to the principles of integrity, responsibi­lity and honesty and to provide excellent service to the people.
