Dr M and wife arrive for two-day visit

KUCHING: The official plane carrying Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali landed at the Kuching Internatio­nal Airport at 10.15am yesterday.

Dr Mahathir who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman is in Sarawak for a two-day visit and this is his first visit after being appointed Malaysia’s seventh premier.

The couple were presented with traditiona­l handmade beaded shawl and bouquet of flowers upon their arrival at the airport.

On hand to welcome them were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and wife Datin Amar Doreen Mayang, Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and wife Datin Sri Pauline Leong, federal Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNKK) Chong Chieng Jen, State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohd Morshidi Abdul Ghani, Pending assemblywo­man Violet Yong, prominent businessma­n Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing as well as heads of govt department­s and community leaders.

From the airport, Dr Mahathir and his wife headed straight to Cove 55 in Santubong to attend the ‘akad nikah ceremony’ and wedding reception of former federal minister Tan Sri Leo Moggie Irok’s granddaugh­ter and her partner.

Dr Mahathir is scheduled to meet Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg today (July 15) at Wisma Bapa Malaysia where the former will be briefed on Sarawak’s developmen­t.

Abang Johari is the chairman of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) – the coalition comprising local political parties.

GPS is the ruling party at state-level but an Opposition at federal level.
