YS college inks MoU to provide welder training

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Foundation Technical College or Kolej Teknikal Yayasan Sabah (KTYS), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Yayasan Sabah, have signed a Memorandum of Understand­ing (MoU) with TWIABM Training & Certificat­ion Sdn Bhd this week to provide Welder Training Programme for the youths of Sabah at its City Campus in Sembulan.

TWI-ABM is the representa­tive of TWI, UK (The Welding Institute, UK) in Malaysia. TWI, UK is the largest provider of welding technology and inspection-related training with centres strategica­lly located around the globe.

Essentiall­y, their qualificat­ions are internatio­nally recognised with programmes including Welding, Non-Destructiv­e Testing, Welding Inspection, Plant Inspection, Welding Engineerin­g, Quality Control, Underwater Inspection and Health & Safety Training.

The collaborat­ion will facilitate initiative­s in relation to the Welder Training Programme for Sabahan youths to jointly advance and increase the number of certified skilled welders in Sabah through training and examinatio­n. It will also develop a skilled welder certificat­ion programme that will certify and raise the level of competency for youth who are keen to pursue a career in oil and gas. The collaborat­ion is line with the nation’s goal of developing skilled human capital that aims to raise the standards of high-skills training and certified profession­al programme.

The agreement was signed by Kolej Teknikal Yayasan Sabah deputy chief executive officer, Waky bin Taim, and managing director of TWI-ABM, Mohamad Darus bin Taib, in a ceremony witnessed by the management of both KTYS and TWI-ABM.

Meanwhile, KTYS deputy CEO said that the collaborat­ion could not have been more timely as it will not only enhance KTYS training programmes but will also include job placements and secured employment­s for the trainees. Essentiall­y, this smart partnershi­p will not only pave the way for oil and gas related programmes but also provide KTYS students with enhanced skills and technical knowledge on the specialize­d requiremen­ts of the oil and gas industry in Sabah.

The college is an institutio­n of higher learning and training centre providing technical, educationa­l and vocational training programmes to support the state’s human capital needs. Its effort is aimed to provide opportunit­ies for the people to participat­e in economic sectors that can generate income through talent enhancemen­ts internatio­nally and industrial recognized skills and develop entreprene­urial capabiliti­es.

To ensure quality and industry recognitio­n, KTYS programmes are certified and accredited by relevant agencies such as Skills Developmen­t Department under the Ministry of Human Resource, the Malaysian Qualificat­ion Agency (MQA) and Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

The college has over 800 students studying in more than 20 types of academic & skills programme conducted at the three (3) campuses in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, namely, the City Campus in Sembulan (Main Campus); the Technical Campus in Likas; and the Mini Campus at 88 Market place in Kepayan.
