Rotary Club’s ‘Gift of Sight’ project benefits 35

TAWAU: The Rotary Club of Tawau, together with Tawau General Hospital and Kunak Hospital, has embarked on a project called the ‘Gift of Sight’ at the Kunak Hospital since last Friday.

The three-day ‘Gift of Sight’ project from July 13 to 15 involve carrying out eye cataract operations on patients who need to replace the lenses of their eyes. There were altogether 35 patients, most of whom were from Kunak and Semporna.

The surgeons performing the operations for the project were Dr Khairuddin bin Othman, Dr Wan Mohd Hafidz Wan Abdul Raman and Dr Azlina Mokhtar from KL . Other doctors involved were Dr Che Ku Hafiza, Dr Kasman bin Jaafar, Dr Muhamaad Aiman bin Ayoop, Dr Arima and all the doctors in Kunak Hospital. Nurses and hospital staff were also there to help making a total manpower of 44 people.

Rotarians led by Datuk Patrick Chin, the organizing chairman of the project took initiative for all the work together with president Paul Vun, IPP Leung Kwok Yau, PP Quek Siew Wah, Rtn Philip Yong, Rtn Christy Salazar, Rtn Chong Wei Ling, Rtn Irene Quek, PP Frankie Chua, Rtn Vivian Thien, Rtn Lean Boon Chen, Rtn Tony Wong and Jason Ong.

All expenses related to the project were borne by the Rotary Club of Tawau while the cost of the lenses were paid by the Rotary Foundation of USA by way of a global grant.

Datuk Patrick Chin also said that the Club will be joining with other NGOs to do another cataract operation sometime in October this year at the Tawau General Hospital.
