Actress Gong Li to chair 55th Golden Horse Awards

TAIPEI: Award-winning actress Gong Li is to chair the jury at the 55th Golden Horse Awards.

She has accepted the invitation from Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, in his role as executive committee chairman of the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival.

Lee believes Gong is the right person as she is an important figure in the Chineselan­guage film industry and has considerab­le internatio­nal experience, the statement from the committee said.

Gong expressed her gratitude at the invitation, willingnes­s to accept the challenge and unreserved dedication to the cinematic arts.

She had been catapulted to stardom in 1988 following the release of Red Sorghum, which received the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Internatio­nal Film Festival (Berlinale), and is best known for her collaborat­ion with legendary director Zhang Yimou.

Other films Gong has starred in, include Ju Dou (1990) and Raise The Red Lantern (1991), both of which were nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards. Farewell My Concubine (1993) is the only Chinese-language film to have won the Palme d’Or, the highest award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Gong’s moving performanc­e in The Story of Qiu Ju (1992) also won her the Best Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival. Previously, she had headed juries at the Berlinale, Venice Film Festival and the Tokyo Internatio­nal Film Festival.

The deadline for submission­s to the awards including features, documentar­ies and animated features is July 31.

The 55th Golden Horse Awards Ceremony will be hosted on Nov 17 at the National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei, with the full list of nominees and names of jury members to be announced on Oct 1.
