DAP to SUPP: Did you get RM3.5 mln or RM1 mln from 1MDB?
KUCHING: A new exposé on the alleged money trail from 1MDB and SRC International to Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) warrants an explanation from its president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.
The call was made by Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak Youth secretary Dr Kelvin Yii, who said the exposé alleged that SUPP received a total of RM3.5 million in funds linked to 1MDB and SRC International rather than RM1 million reported previously.
“As the money was purportedly misappropriated from 1MDB and SRC International, it would be important for Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian to come clean on the actual amount received and reveal their intentions on whether they (SUPP) will return these illicit funds to the rightful parties or not,” he said in a press statement yesterday.
On July 2, the 1MDB special investigative task force announced that more than 400 bank accounts, including the accounts of SUPP, were frozen on suspicion of receiving funds allegedly originating from 1MDB amounting to RM1.1 billion. The freezing of SUPP's accounts was confirmed beforehand by Dr Sim on June 29.
"At that period of time, SUPP said they would cooperate and comply with any investigation by the authority. RM3.5 million is not a small amount and I'm sure they would have been aware if such money had passed through their accounts.
“SUPP should have come clean when these allegations were made many years ago and state the actual amount received in the first place if they really had nothing to hide,” he added.
Dr Yii also wondered if SUPP would still have been willing to be transparent of the alleged channeling of funds into their accounts if Pakatan Harapan had not won the general election, adding the party should do the rightful thing by coming clean and returning the money to the rightful parties, especially if it came from public funds.
