Sabah shuttlers bring home three gold medals from Taiwan

KOTA KINABALU: Sabahbased KY Badminton Club (KYBC) shuttlers clinched three gold, one silver and one bronze medals in the just concluded 47th World Veteran Morning Cup Badminton Championsh­ips & Wu Wen Ta Memorial Badminton Championsh­ip in Taiwan.

Datuk Sr. Anthony Linggian and Zaini Garip created a surprise in the first attempt by winning gold in the Men’s Doubles (65year-old).

Zaini claimed a second gold from the Men’s Singles while the third title was from the Veteran Doubles (45-year-old) through S.M. Lee and Roland Petrus.

John Ho captured the silver medal in the Men’s Veteran Singles (75-year-old category) and the bronze was from Lee and son, Lee Ying, who lost narrowly to the eventual champion.

“Their achievemen­ts had placed KYBC on the world map and we are all proud of them,” said team manager Hj Ahmat Alimuddin in a statement to the press yesterday.

“They will now be preparing for the last World Veteran Circuit for the year in Chengdu, China from November 1 to 4.

“We wish to thank KYBC president Datuk KY Mustafa, Patron Datuk Seri Panglima Salleh Said and Ararat Sports’ Ben Wong for their kind support in making the trip possible,” he added.

KYBC sent 18 shuttlers to the four-day tournament, which saw 121 events organised for around 4,000 players from all over the world.
