National No 2 mixed doubles duo cruise to quarter-finals

SINGAPORE: Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai yesterday cruised to the quarter-finals of the Singapore Badminton Open 2018 tournament here.

Held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, the national No 2 pair defeated Xiangyu Ren-Tang Jinhua from China 21-19, 21-9 in just 31 minutes.

The championsh­ip which offers total prize money of US$355,000 (US$1=RM4.055) ends Sunday.

In the quarter-finals, the second seeds will meet Indonesian pair Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari.

Former national shuttlers had different fates as Chong Wei Feng upset Thai shuttler Pannawit Thongnuam 21-11, 21-16 while Daren Liew lost to Indonesia’s Ihsan Maulana Mustofa 23-21, 21-16.

Chong will face Qiao Bin from China for a slot in Saturday’s semifinals.

Men’s doubles duo Mohamad Arif Ab Latif-Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub got their place in the quarter-finals after beating compatriot­s Goh Sze Fei-Tan Wee Gieen 21-11, 21-8. They will meet Ou Xuanyi-Xiangyu Ren of China today. Meanwhile, another men’s double pair as well as the women’s doubles pair ended their journey at the tournament.

Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik who just got their last minute inclusion for the World Championsh­ips in Nanjing, China end of this month, were defeated by Indonesian pair Angga Pratama-Rian Agung Saputro.

Their game dragged into the rubber-set but they lost 21-19, 18-21, 22-20 in 58 minutes.

Goh Yea Ching-Vivian Hoo meanwhile lost to fourth seeds Chayanit Chaladchal­am-Phataimas Muenwong of Thailand 21-12, 22-20. Bernama
