UCSF overall champs of Masiswa Games
KOTA KINABALU: University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) were crowned overall overall champions in the Malaysia IPTS Sports Council (Masiswa) Games for Sabah Zone yesterday.
UCSF collected six gold, four silver and two bronze medals to beat 19 other private colleges and universities (IPTS) in the three-day championship which ended at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex in Likas near here.
The gold medals were won in the badminton event for men’s doubles, chess (women’s individual and women’s team), tenpin bowling (men’s individual and team) and netball.
UCSF also won silver in badminton (women’s doubles), chess (women’s individual), table tennis (men’s individual) and football (women) while the bronze were from tenpin bowling (men and women individual).
INTI College Sabah finished second overall with four gold and two silver while Tunku Abdul Rahman University College was third overall with three gold and one bronze.
Hosts SIDMA College settled for fourth overall with two gold, two silver and five bronze.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal was the guest of honour at the closing of the Games, which saw a record entry of 20 IPTS with around 600 involved in the 10 sports being contested.
In his speech, Shafie assured the new state government was serious in ensuring that education in Sabah will reach greater heights, thus a new portfolio for the Education and Innovation Ministry was set up in the state.
Meanwhile, the main aim of the Masiswa Games was to strengthen the bond among the communities of all IPTS in Sabah, to inspire fitness in daily lives as well as to encourage students to become wholesomely better by taking part in any sports events in and off campus.
Among those present were Masiswa president Datuk Professor Dr. Mohd Zamri Yusoff, chairman of SIDMA College-cum-Masiswa Games Sabah Zone patron Dr Morni Hj Kambrie, SIDMA College chief executive Azizan Khalid Merican, Masiswa Sabah Zone coordinator Morsede Mohamad, Sabah Sports Board chairman Datuk Louis Rampas and general manager Datuk Penyuki Matta.
