KUALA LUMPUR: A policeman who hit his ex-wife, a police officer, in the face, causing her to bleed at the mouth, was fined RM1,300 by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday.

Magistrate Maizatul Munirah Abd Rahman imposed the sentence on Corporal Sophian Sahrun, 36, after he pleaded guilty to the charge and ordered him to be sentenced to three months’ jail if he failed to pay the fine.

The father of two was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to Nor Haizah Yacob, 32, at the Second Floor, Kelompok Tempua, Jalan AU2, Keramat, here at 3 am on Sept 26, 2017.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code and could be sentenced under the same section and act to jail up to a year or fined up to RM2,000 or both.

The accused who was not represented by counsel appealed for a lighter sentence on the reason that he was the sole breadwinner of the family.

“I have two children who are still schooling and am also looking after my parents...I regret my mistake,” he said.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, taking into consideration the safety of the public and the victim.

“Any problem can be solved civilly and there is no need for violence...the accused should have acted rationally,” she said.

According to the facts of the case, on the day of the incident, the victim was in the accused’s house to discuss their children, but in the course of the discussion, an argument broke out between the two. - Bernama
