Six-day remand for man accused of robbing petrol station, injuring trio

-

MIRI: A 57-year-old man was remanded for six days yesterday for allegedly robbing a petrol station in Senadin and injuring three persons on Sunday.

Acting district police chief DSP Aldrin Junaidi Kutoi said a judge granted the remand order until July 29 to enable further investigation under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery.

In a statement to the press yesterday, Aldrin said the incident happened shortly before 7pm when the suspect took out a machete from under his shirt and attacked two female workers behind the counter.

“Both victims ran out of the station shouting for help. It was by coincidence that the father of one of the victims happened to be fuelling up at the station.

“He chased after the suspect, who had taken about RM2,000 from the cash register, but was attacked and injured while trying to apprehend the suspect,” he said, adding the incident was captured on the station's security camera system – the footage of which went viral later the same night.

The suspect managed to run about 500 metres before he was caught by pursuing members of the public, who then handed him over to the police.

“Based on observation and initial investigation, we believe the suspect has some sort of mental illness,” said Aldrin.

He added that the attack left the 19-year-old worker with a fractured skull and slash wounds on her back, while her father and co-worker sustained bodily injuries.

All were sent to Miri Hospital for treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
