- By Jenne Lajiun

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government will be looking to introduce digital certificates which can be recognized as official certificate documents.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau said that this was one of the government’s efforts to ease the daily lives of the people of Sabah.

Tangau said the certificate can be applied online and the applicant will receive a soft copy of the certificate.

“The authenticity of the certificate will be recognized worldwide as it is issued by a certificate authority that has been authorized to issue digital certificates,” he said in his speech for the launch of the Sabah State Agencies Chief Information Officers conference held at Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa yesterday.

Tangau was represented by his assistant minister, Ben Chong.

He also announced the launch of the Sabah government’s mobile application (app) which provides two functions – leave applications (e-cuti application) and checking of salary payment. He hoped that more of such applications would be created so that the complaints and applications by the people can be channeled to the government and addressed speedily.

He also said that the theme of this year’s conference was ‘Reinventing government through digital innovation’.

“Reinventing means transforming or re-creating. With the new government, we can create and improve the delivery of the government’s services to the people utilizing various digital based innovation,” he said.

He reminded that those at the receiving end of the services rendered by the government have been exposed to the ICT environment since they were young and were not alien to the use of computers, smartphones and tablets.

He also said that as a citizen centric government, the service delivery must be diversified, particularly those related to the business entity and the people.

“The counter services must be diversified by introducing kiosk and online inquiry and online payments. Failure to carry out such transformation will cause the agencies to become irrelevant,” he said.

Tangau also stressed the need for the state to provide ICT infrastructure and high-speed internet connection.

He said that all government agencies must go through a digital transformation in the provision of its services to the people and enhancing their efficiency.

Also present at the event were Sabah Government Chief Information Officer Datuk Pounis @ Joseph Guntavid and Sabah Computer Services Department director Datuk Dr Mingu Jumaan.
