Liew Daren faces Srikanth in third round
KUALA LUMPUR: Independent player, Liew Darren, the sole Malaysian men’s singles representative in the 2018 BWF World Championships will meet world number six, K.Srikanth of India in the third round in Nanjing, China, today.
According to the championships website, w w w. bwfworldchampionships.com, the professional player who is now ranked 38th took only 37 minutes to subdue Misha Zilberman of Israel, 21-16, 21-16 yesterday.
Daren became the Malaysian hope in the men’s singles after Chong Wei withdrew from the tournament due to health problems.
At the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre, national women’s singles ace, Goh Jin Wei was also victorious against Japan’s Aya Ohori with a 21-18, 22-20 win in the second round.
She will next face eighth seed, Nozomi Okuhara of Japan.
In the men’s doubles, Goh V ShemTan Wee Kiong beat compatriots Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, 21-16, 21-15 to battle China’s Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen in the third round.
Meanwhile another men’s pair, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik also advanced to the third round after overpowering Taiwan’s Lee Jhe HueiLee Yang 16-21, 21-18, 21-19 and they are down to meet Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark.
In the women’s doubles, Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean earned a hardfought win against Germany’s Isabel Herttrich-Carla Nelte in 16-21, 21-17, 22-20. They will face Indonesians, Greysia Polii-Apriyani Rahayu in the third round.
Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei however were shown the exit by Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi (Japan) in 12-21, 21-19, 12-21.
